Sir, – Una Mullally ("Time to call out Fine Gael's shirking on abortion", Opinion & Analysis, December 7th) devotes another column to criticising the use of "cruel language" by the opponents of whatever particular cause she has decided to champion on any given week (abortion, same-sex marriage, gender quotas, etc). She seems to have no compunction in deploying such language against anyone who disagrees with her. She attacks the "sly" and "pussyfooting" Enda Kenny, the "floundering" and "muttering" Leo Varadkar, and the "callous and offensive" Paul Bradford, all of whom she accuses of dismissing the views of what she sarcastically describes as "silly-billy women". She refers to what she claims is the actual basis of the arguments of those who are opposed to abortion, namely their "religious beliefs". Really? This devoted atheist, who also happens to oppose the introduction of abortion, would beg to differ. – Yours, etc,
ERIC KEANE,
Burren, Co Clare.
