Madam, - Although Liam Ó Géibheannaigh (April 28th) and Minister for Integration Conor Lenihan (April 29th) ostensibly differ on the value of immigration, they arguably have more in common than is immediately apparent.
Both prioritise economic factors in discussing the topic, potentially leading to a reductionist, distorted and partial assessment of what is a complex, challenging and multi-faceted issue.
It would be a pity if the open debate favoured by both should exclude an acknowledgement of what a multi-racial, ethnically diverse and culturally plural society could contribute to a 21-century Irish republic. - Yours, etc,
