Madam, - Further to the report in your edition of May 20th, "Minister insists on Irish version of Dingle", it may be worth noting that Dingle is a name which has been in continuous use for more than 400 years, though often in forms such as Dingle i Couch or Dinglecoche, which reflect what is perhaps the most "correct" name, Daingean Uí Chúis (variously described as the fortress of O'Cush or Hussey). - Yours, etc,
STEVE MacDONOGH, (Author of The Dingle Peninsula), Lispole, Co Kerry.
Madam, - Mr Éamon Ó Cuív may feel that using An Daingean should not pose "any more difficulty for tourists than the switch from Kingstown to Dún Laoghaire or from Queenstown to Cobh", but Bray, Co Wicklow, dependent on its seaside tourist trade, officially changed its name to Brí Chualann in 1923 - and with overwhelming local support changed it back to Bray in 1927. - Yours, etc,
MARY DAVIES, Hollybank Avenue Lower, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.
