Sir, - I was on the pilgrimage for the beatification of Edmund Rice in Rome. Like Dr Gerry Molloy (letters, October 4th) I too wondered why Mary Robinson did not attend this historic ceremony.
It was indeed a great day for all Christian Brothers, who have served us well, but especially for all Irish people to have publicly acclaimed an Irishman such as Edmund Rice as Blessed in recognition of his charity and good works. It was certainly an honour to be in Rome in St Peter's Square that morning, waving our green scarves, proud to be Irish.
We read so much about those who have good and bad memories of their schooldays with the Christian Brothers. Both sides have to be heard, but nevertheless let us also remember those who speak only good of their schooldays. To those Brothers whom we have known and loved, let us salute, them for their generosity, charity and endless dedication. Yours, etc.,
St Mary's Road,
