Sir, - I thoroughly enjoyed Kevin Myers's account of a journey on Dublin bus (An Irishman's Diary, November 28th).
While I feel his decision to make the journey in the first place was an innocent mistake, he must be commended for attempting to defend the honor of our Australian guest.
It is refreshing for once to read about the realities of using public transport. When our politicians, the DTO, and various media people constantly drone on about us all being good little citizens and using public transport, it makes me wonder how many of them actually have tried it themselves.
For any of these "righteous" people that would like the experience, I have two suggestions:
1. Try taking a train from Connolly Station to Maynooth at 5:40 p.m. Even with the extra carriages, behold the dangerous overcrowding. I frequently don't bother to look for a seat until I get to Leixlip. The stampede of shoving commuters as the train stops does not interest me.
2. Try taking a Nitelink bus on Saturday night from Dublin to Maynooth - sober. protective clothing and ear muffs are recommended. Oh and be careful of the vomit on the way out. - Yours, etc.,
