Sir, - It is hard to understand why social welfare benefit recipients must wait six months - and in some cases nine months - before any of the paltry and muchvaunted increases awarded to them actually materialise.
When Mr McCreevy and his ilk award themselves increases these are implemented pretty smartly and can even be made retrospective.
The unfortunate GAA must wait three years before getting the final instalment of its badly needed £20 million and no doubt it is hoping to get its first instalment of £7 million in 1998, probably around the same time as the old-age pensioners get their £5 per week.
Wouldn't it be nice if the GAA gave OAPs free passes to all matches in Croke Park? - Yours, etc.,
