Madam, - Although today's Irish Timesreaders are deprived of the observational genius of the late Myles na Gopaleen, how thankful we are to have Fintan O'Toole to shout that the emperor has no clothes.

In his article "The art world's thirst for Hirst is rooted in fear, not admiration" (Weekend Review, September 20th), he exposes the mindset of those who spent obscene amounts of money to bolster their egos, not to obtain precious works of art.

"But as an artist, he is frankly rubbish." Thanks to Mr O'Toole for speaking for so many of us. - Yours, etc,

JEANETTE F. HUBER, Kinsale, Co Cork.
