Sir, - Desmond White's assertion (June 8th) that the British Israelites were not looking for the Ark of the Covenant at Tara, is incorrect. Mr Walton Adams, British Israelite, Freemason and Archaeologist, was one of the men who arrived at Tara in June, 1899, to dig for the Ark. He wrote in the Covenant People, (volume 9, 1903) "That the Ark of the Lord is deposited in the Mound at Tara, there is in our mind but little doubt."

Rev Denis Hanan, Freemason, Antiquarian and president of the Irish Branch of the British Israeli Association wrote (the Covenant People, volume 5 1899) that the tomb of Tephi was the only place on the hill that was of "sufficient importance to need excavation." It was their intention to present the Ark to Edward VII, who was a Freemason and a Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge in England from 1874-1901. - Yours, etc., Mairead Carew, Archaeologist
