Sir, – Based on my citation of Biblical verses (Letters, December 14th), Aileen Hooper (Letters, December 15th) seems to be under the impression that I am a pro-choice Christian! In fact, I am a pro-life atheist, and I do not consider the Bible to be an inherently better guide to morality than Harry Potter.

The reason I cited Exodus in my previous letter was merely to illustrate how one can cite scripture to support any position, even one contradicted by other verses. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – There have been many letters quoting scripture and yet it really should not be relevant to the abortion debate, especially since many are quick to say they are not anti-choice for religious reasons. This should be a practical matter – women are getting abortions here or in the UK, they are being allowed to do so by the Government, so it is time to legalise abortion as most other member states of the EU have done decades ago. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – Chris McCrohan (December 14th) writes that going by his interpretation of the word of the Bible, “God does not in fact consider the preborn to be a human”.

No less an authority on the word of God, than Blessed Pope John Paul II has publicly declared in Evangelium Vitae, point 60 “Some people try to justify abortion by claiming that the result of conception, at least up to a certain number of days, cannot yet be considered a personal human life. But in fact, from the time that the ovum is fertilised, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It would never be made human if it were not human already”. – Yours, etc,
