Sir, - I would like to congratulate CHDDA and Dublin Corporation for their superb remodelling of Custom House Quay around the famine statues by Ronan Gillespie. For once, homage has been paid to our tired old river as it meanders through the centre of the city. Now wouldn't it be an impressive sight if all the quays on both sides of the Liffey, from the Matt Talbot to the East Link bridges, and around the Grand Canal Basin were to be developed in such a fashion as a linear park. Then all Dubliners could enjoy the gracefulness of the river.
As a park it would function as a necessary breathing space; amid all the plans for high rise buildings, LUAS tracks and link roads, a thought which seems much neglected by this city's planners and politicians.
Just think, if we start right away, how magnificent our city would look when the tall ships sail up the river this August. - Yours, etc., Bernadette Scully,
Custom House Harbour, Dublin 1.
