Sir, - In your Editorial "Tackling the Gridlock" (September 30th), you point out how rapidly car ownership is rising. The concern is that this offers little hope of improving the traffic crisis.
You might be interested to know of a survey carried out in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the number of cars on the road doubled in five years. In the same period, flexible working hours were introduced in the area on a widespread basis.
"Rush hour" traffic as a percentage of the "entire day traffic circulation" decreased despite the doubling of car numbers. In addition, the circulation of cars was now spread over what became a wider "rush period" rather than a " rush hour".
Here in Dublin, there is now a strong case for those organisations already on flexitime to widen further the allowable arrival and departure bands in order to assist in the better circulation of traffic. - Yours, etc., Ciaran Rowsome,
Managing Director, Flextime Ltd, Sandyford Industrial Estate, Dublin 18.
