Symptoms of stroke politics

Sir, – By the time I got to page 15 of Wednesday’s paper (October 3rd) I was in a state of despondency. Such a litany of discontent and powerlessness would wear down even the most determined optimist. Then, with great pleasure and amusement I read “An Irishman’s Diary”! Always enjoyable, I think Frank McNally surpassed himself on Wednesday.

For 16 months I have endured the derision (good-humoured of course) of friends and family when I express my confidence that Enda Kenny will steer a steady and morally upright course. I had confidence that under his leadership, politics would finally be changed in Ireland.

I must confess that lately my faith is wavering. While I believe that Enda Kenny is a decent and honest man, I fear his political survival monitor is stronger than his will to change the old ways that served us so badly. The country feels leaderless at the moment and it is not comfortable.

Thank you, Frank McNally, for cheering me up and for relieving the gloom and sense of impending disaster. – Yours, etc,
