Sir, - One doesn't have to be Swift to see irony in the fact that what Mr Grant mocks (the visit of USS John F Kennedy) (June 5th) is one of the things that ensured that he would have the right to openly and freely express himself (even in a national newspaper).
Without the military might of the US (and dare I say it, the British) Mr Grant's letter might possibly have been about the wonderful party conference in Moscow and the brilliant success of the latest five year plan.
Speaking softly is all very fine but somebody must perform the unenviable task of carrying the big stick. Yours, etc.,
