Sir, - Peter Sutherland hit the nail on the head when he spoke about the negative consequences for Ireland if we don't reverse the Nice referendum result. The good will enjoyed by Ireland within the EU has always meant that we have exercised a power and influence beyond that which might be expected from a country of our size. That goodwill is now in jeopardy as Ireland is seen to be, and in fact is, standing in the way of enlargement.

Ireland has long been regarded as an example to the candidate countries of the economic benefits of EU membership. Close links are being formed between this country and those wishing to join, which will be of immense benefit to Ireland after enlargement. To be seen to be turning our backs on those who are trying to enter the EU and benefit as we have done may alienate some potential allies and trading partners. If there is a second referendum, perhaps the campaign slogan should read: "Vote No and lose Power, Money and Influence" - Yours, etc.,
