Sir - Quite apart from the ethical considerations of altering the genetic makeup of a plant to suit the commercial needs of a multinational company, the recent issuing of a licence by the Environmental Protection Agency to allow sugar beet to be grown in Ireland, which is resistant to the pesticide "Roundup" is very worrying.

This may possibly give rise to increased use of this pesticide, with consequent adverse health effects: As we do not have a register of diseases thought to be due to pesticide exposure, we may never know. - Yours, etc.,
