Sir, - In support of his opposition to an underground element in the proposed LUAS system, Eamonn Maloney (September 1st) makes the sweeping claim that "as of last month, the civil authorities in Stockholm decided to close down and seal off the city underground network".
Speaking from the Swedish capital, one of the few cities in the world to benefit from a comprehensive, efficient and affordable public transport system, I wish to inform you that the excellent and reliable "Tunnelbana", far from being "closed down and sealed off" remains very much a viable entity on which many Stockholm citizens confidently depend for their daily commuting.
Admittedly, due to the activities of thugs, its hours of operation have been curtailed to approximately those of the Dublin bus service. This is however very different from being "closed down and sealed off". - Yours, etc.,
Royal Viking Hotel, Stockholm.
