Sir, – I totally agree with Fintan O’Toole (“Irish State means little to many of its citizens”, Opinion, August 7th).
However, so long as our politicians, bankers, legislators, clergy and opinion makers fail to show any patriotism, idealism or morality at this time of grave crisis brought on us citizens by them, then I fear due to our own inability to replace them, we will continue to suffer their tyranny.
I mean, if it took 800 years of struggle and rebellion only to arrive at where we are now, then there is something very wrong with us as a people. Perhaps 800 years of EU and German domination may eventually sort us out. – Yours, etc,
