Sir, - We are writing as Presbyterian Ministers, from Northern Ireland and the South, who, as evangelicals, are deeply concerned at the present disaster facing us. We understand the gospel to be about encountering the crucified and risen Christ, transferring all allegiance to him. Jesus told us to love God first and then love our neighbour as we love ourselves (Matthew 22v37). But in Ulster, many calling themselves Christians are insisting instead on their rights, refusing to compromise. They are putting loyalty to Ulster before Jesus's commands. It is being disobedient to Him.
Whilst accepting people have a right to protest, we insist that we have no right to disobey the lawful government, unless it contradicts our loyalty to Christ. The command to love our neighbour is more important than the right to march. People are choosing tradition and culture over obedience and faith. This betrays the gospel. Such disobedience is being shown on the media around the world. The current situation demands both repentance and prayer. - Yours, etc., S. Rea, J. B Moore, S. Stockman, G. Connor, B. McMillen, D.
