Sir, - We are told that children and adults do not take enough exercise. Are we surprised, when there are so few local facilities that people can use, when so many children in schools give up sports because there are not enough pitches to play on or teachers to train them?
I see the necessity for facilities to encourage the top athletes, but if I have to prioritise, I would prefer to have a well-exercised general population than a sedentary population going to watch a few talented athletes.
I would prefer the money for the National Stadium to go to providing more facilities in schools and at local level so that all those ordinary people who want to play sports will be able to. - Yours, etc.,
Gabrielle Bowe, Palmerston Road, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
