Sir, - Can we really continue having large crowd events like the St Patrick's Festival if it leaves the streets of the capital city like some Third World shanty town?
The volume of on-street litter of all kinds in the aftermath of the event along the parade route and in the precincts of the Custom House Quay carnival was just shocking, while 24 hours later St Stephen's Green remained a massive tip-head of beer bottles, cans and plastic debris of every sort.
This raises a further issue. What provision for additional litter receptacles did the festival organisers and Dublin Corporation make on St Patrick's Day? While everyone should take responsibility for their own litter, this is obviously too much to ask of the significant yob element that behaved no better than animals in the circumstances. - Yours, etc., Stephen O'Byrnes,
Lower Leeson Street, Dublin 2.
