Sir, - I have followed with interest the debate in your columns about the restoration work at St Canice's Cathedral, in 1992 a grant of £20,000 was awarded to the Select Vestry of the St Patrick's Cathedral Group of Parishes for restoration works at St Audoen's Church, Cornmarket, Dublin, by the National Heritage Council.
A condition of this grant was that we consulted with the Office of Public Works, especially in relation to the cleaning and repointing of the exterior of the north and west walls. This we were happy to do through our architect. Surely a similar condition applied to the grant awarded to St Canice's?
I fear that, if clear answers are not given in the case of the restoration work at St Canice's, grants to other churches and cathedrals in the ownership of the Church of Ireland may be jeopardised. Perhaps it is time the Dean of Ossory put pen to paper. - Yours, etc.,
(The Rev Canon), Vicar, St Audoen's Church, Cornmarket,
