Sir, - Allow me to congratulate you on your excellent sports coverage. We can all be thankful that long gone is the day when the sports reports fitted on to the top half of page two. Although the efforts of Messrs Byrne, Thornley, Downey, Humpbries. Van Esbeck et al have surely contributed to a great reduction in "sports illiteracy," it would appear that greater efforts must be made to educate their colleagues.
I recall once opening my Irish Times to read that a well known political leader had unwittingly scored something called "a known goal". Perhaps a distant relative of the more famous "Owen Goal" or OG for short? I was also amazed to read, in my Weekend Supplement of September 27th, that the All Ireland senior football final would begin with "kick off at 3.30."
Having such faith as I do in The Irish Times I settled down in front of my TV, eagerly awaiting the sight of McDermott kicking off to McGuinness. Alas, this game of Gaelic football started like all others before it, with a throw in. Yours, etc..
