Madam, - What is it with our media and Irish sports stories?

Is it not enough that we have, in recent years, managed to clock up two Olympic medallists who now have shadows cast over their performances? Why do we have to wallow in all our teams' internal squabbles?

We are now receiving blow by blow accounts via radio, television and newspapers about an unseemly row concerning the Irish equestrian team. This does our image on the world stage of sport no favours and is also emphasising pettiness and back-biting within our sporting organisations, rather than the performance and enjoyment of sport.

Swimming, soccer, horse-riding - one is almost inclined to cry, "A plague on all your houses" if they cannot sort themselves quietly and with dignity. The media should give less emphasis to these events and the players should do less talking on the airwaves.
