Madam, - The empty seats at the arenas are eloquent testimony to the fact that the Olympic Games lack excitement and go on too long. So far, the only high point has been Sean Kelly's accent.
The organisers could remedy this by combining events to add a little spice to our viewing. For instance, target shooting would go nicely with the 100-metres sprint. Line the shooters up along the side of the track and unleash the runners. There might be empty spaces on the podium but records would tumble. The best shots could graduate to the 110-metre hurdles.
Other combinations which suggest themselves are javelin and synchronised swimming, clay-pigeon shooting and discus and, of course, archery and cycling. The latter will eliminate the slow bicycle races at the velodrome. - Yours, etc.,
