Madam, - I wonder if I am the only regular reader of The Irish Timeswho finds intensely tiresome the ever-increasing tendency for headlines to be worded in the form of a pun - no matter how great the distortion or how poor the pun.
A typical example is the headline to an article - a good one, too - in the Health Supplement of April 15th, on acquiring a pet for a home with young children: "Paws for thought before deciding to bring a pet home".
Could any attempt at a pun be more pathetic? Could such a heading be anything but off-putting to any potentially interested reader who might indeed be tempted to read on? - Yours, etc,
MICHAEL d'ALTON,
