Madam, – The Commissioners of Irish Lights will silence fog horns today (Home News, January 10th). They have been overtaken as an aid to shipping by GPS and other navigational aids. Can the commissioners conceive of any situation in the future where they might be of use? Astronomers have speculated on the possibility of a piece of space junk hitting a satellite, causing a cascade which could seriously impair global communications.
I wish to plead with the commissioners to at least leave the foghorns in place. We know not the hour or day. Anyone remember the old Dublin trams? – Yours, etc,
