Sir, - Now that the pride and passion is back in Irish Rugby, could we please have our national anthem back also?
"Ireland's Call" is but a sop to Unionism. It has not worked and it never will. Rugby supporters do not like it and will not sing it. Those of us who were at the Twickenham massacre this year had firstly to endure the silence of our new anthem - the only people singing it were the team. The huge gulf between it and the English anthem that followed was but a foretaste of what was to come.
If it is not politically possible to have Amhran na bhFiann on its own, and I do not see why not, at least let us have something that we all know and which will lift both the roof and the spirit, e.g. "The Fields of Athenry" or "There is an Isle". - Yours, etc., Eamonn Ashe,
Drogheda, Co Louth.
