Sir, - I understand that the AA believes that cars have nothing to do with traffic congestion in Dublin which, according to them, has a relatively low density of cars. The fact that the cars on our roads usually have a low density of occupants doesn't seem to concern them, and they have done nothing to promote schemes based on high occupancy of vehicles (HOV).

Anyway, for those of us who live on this planet, perhaps some remedies are needed. Here are some suggestions: three strikes and out if you commit three motoring or parking offences in a year, you automatically disqualify yourself from driving for a year. A real scrappage scheme: give a new bike to anyone who scraps any car and doesn't replace it. Off road, off road: allow offroad vehicles (you know the ones - they look like tractors, have silly names and inhibit road visibility) to drive only off the road i.e. in fields, on mountains, under water etc. HOV: allow full cars to use bus lanes. BIK: extend benefit in kind tax to "free" parking. - Yours, etc.,
