Madam, – Could Dr Declan Bedford (March 2nd) outline just how many lives he feels will be saved by a cut in the motorway speed limit by 10km/h?
According to the Road Safety Authority there were just four fatal/injury collisions on motorways in 2009, the most recent year that statistics are available, compared with 198 on two-way single carriageways.
I don’t think there’s any question that inappropriate speed may cause accidents, but equally there really is no need to cut the limit on the safest roads in the State. – Yours, etc,
