Sir, - Robert H. Gahan highlighted a major problem on our roads when he wrote (July 30th) about the problem of large, slow moving loads. There is something wrong when at peak commuting hours long lines of traffic build up behind slow moving construction plant, as can be seen every day on the routes leading into Limerick city.
It seems reasonable that such machines should be banned during peak hours. Could we also expect our legislators to have the wit to compel such traffic to pull to one side periodically, to allow backed up normal traffic to pass? Would the road authorities ever consider replacing the "Slow Lane" signs with a "Keep Left Except to Pass" where they have built slow lanes/climbing lanes on two lane roads?
There's not much point building these lanes at great expense, if many drivers continue to ignore them or just don't know what they are for. If we don't do something like this, there's not going to be a lot of benefit out of all the money now being spent on roads. - Yours, etc.,
Castleconnell,
Co Limerick.
