Sir, – Tom Hennigan’s Peru Letter (World News, August 9th) was a fascinating story of the work of the clergy of Cork in the Peruvian slums of Trujillo. However he gives little mention to the work of the Cork nuns in combating poverty in la Esperanza and other desperately poor parts of the city.
In 1985 my husband and I were medical students and spent the summer assisting in the medical clinics run by the sisters. Sisters from the Presentation, Bon Secours and Mercy orders funded, built and operated outpatient clinics treating patients with a variety of problems, in particular tuberculosis.
They were brave, committed women working in the most difficult of conditions, and the people of Cork can remember them with pride. We can be confident that the brave and dedicated priests would not want the work of the sisters to be eclipsed by their own. – Yours, etc,
