Sir, - Gerard Regan (June 7th) is wrong when he says he is forced to pay a political levy to the Labour Party through his union SIPTU. If he reads his union rule book there should be a rule about the political levy, in all trade unions registered under the Friendly Societies Act of Great Britain and Ireland.

The paying of a political levy is optional. Any member can opt out at any time, by stating on a form that he/she does not wish to pay a political levy. No one is forced to pay a political levy, because it is against The Friendly Societies Act 1876, as stated above. - Yours, etc.,
