Madam, – The report "Simpsons sweatshop scene sparks row" (World News, October 11th) raises a very interesting set of questions concerning the global animation industry and the exploitative nature of capitalism generally. However there is nothing new in all of this. As early as 1992 The Simpsonswas parodying itself in terms of its Trans-Pacific origins. In one episode viewers saw its news anchor Kent Brockman reporting on location from a South Korean animation house where the animators were drawing and colouring at bayonet point. Irony aside, The Simpsonscontinues to be a major source of profit for Twentieth Century Fox and the real reason why it is animated in South Korea is cheap labour. It is estimated that South Korean animators receive only one-third of what their counterparts in the US might be paid. – Yours, etc,
