Sir, - There are certain signs that let us know the seasons of the year - falling leaves in autumn, snow in winter, the cuckoo in the spring and the disappearing news, staff of RTE in summer.
Private industry seems to have the capacity to continue working throughout the summer without a virtual closedown, yet RTE seem to be incapable of doing the same. One newsreader has now replaced the two newsreaders, a business correspondent, and a sports correspondent, for the Six One News to provide an even more mediocre coverage of news events than we had before.
When are RTE going to wake up to the fact that they are a service industry, with a disappearing customer base which will continue to disappear until they realise that they are there to provide the best service possible to their customers? In this day and age this does not include a minimum two month holiday break for their news staff. - Yours, etc.,
