Sir, – Referring to David Adams’s article (Opinion, December 29th), I am curious why such a negative illustration of recession-hit towns cannot be balanced with possible resolutions.
How can the thousands of shoppers, residents, workers and families who make positive use of their recession-hit town feel encouraged to keep going when articles like this depict such a bleak and hopeless picture?
The reality is a real sense of positivity on the streets of my recession-hit town; people are upbeat, many family-run businesses are battling, but still stand as the backbone of employment in the town, and the positive effects of people rallying together in different associations to work for the good of the town are very evident.
In the interest of making a positive use of media power, I think Mr Adams should consider doing a detailed account of the recovery efforts being made in recession-hit towns rather than digging their grave by detailing their “agonising death”.
Well done to RTÉ for providing positive business programmes such as those hosted by George Lee and Fergal Quinn. This is what our country needs now. – Yours, etc,
