Sir, - Last weekend I experienced the best and worst of Dublin.
I attended the wedding of two Amercian friends in the Shelbourne Hotel. Over 100 family and friends had travelled to Ireland for the wedding despite the trauma of September 11th. The Shelbourne's staff, especially the chef, made the wedding a really special day, a day our American friends will never forget.
Unfotunately, my experience with Dublin taxis put a damper on the evening. When I tried to get a taxi to Blackrock from St Stephen's Green at 4 a.m., I had to wait over two hours. Yet was not a rugby weekend, nor was it Christmas.
When I complained to the taxi-driver he said no drivers wanted to work late at night!
Well, I have an easy solution. The Government should given taxi licences to all the refugees arriving in Ireland. This would give employment and might bring the Dublin taxi service into the 21st century. - Yours, etc.,
Gemma Woods, Sprucefield, Belfast 11.
