Madam, – What a refreshing letter from Ray Doherty (July 29th)! If only we had more people like him around, instead of the usual whiners, whingers and begrudgers – some at least of whom are probably considerably better off than he is – who usually populate your Letters page.
I am one of the “countless thousands” around the country whom he guesses are in a similar position to himself. In fact, I am probably even more fortunate than he is, having been extremely lucky all through my working life. I have a few years to go to pension age, but should I make it, I will also qualify for the old-age pension, regardless of the fact that I hopefully will have no need of it to enjoy a safe and comfortable retirement. Also, while my monthly medical bills would appear to be more than his, and I am grateful for some help with same, I feel it is absolutely scandalous that I am required to contribute only €100 when there is so much need – and needless waste – around. Hopefully we might hear from some more of Mr Doherty’s thousands. Congratulations, Mr Doherty. – Yours, etc,
