Sir, - It is nothing less than a disgrace that annual flooding of the Shannon basin is allowed to continue. The area has been flooding consistently for years and the appropriate authority adequately qualified to set it right has done nothing about it.
As a consulting engineer with over 35 years' experience and as the one who instigated the work to have much of the River Boyne cured of flooding in the early 1970s, I challenge the State to attend to this national disaster.
The clearing of the river channel, correcting of riverbanks, removal of obstructions to free flow and the proper control of ESB weirs, are the areas to concentrate on. - Yours, etc.
