Sir, - I read with a degree of disbelief the views of Mr L. Kavanagh (July 2nd) on the opening of the Ann Summers "sex shop" on O'Connell Street, Dublin. I applaud the gentleman's open-mindedness, but must also point out that with an outlet of this, some might say, dubious virtue, proposing to commence business on the country's premier thoroughfare, the scant disregard some individuals may have for the care of youngsters in the nation's capital is unnerving.
Are things not bad enough with a drugs epidemic, under-age consumption of alcohol and teenage pregnancies without the added worries of the availability of pornographic material to minors?
The opening of this shop is unashamed "sex-ploitation", an industry which, until now, has rightly been banished to the back streets. - Yours, etc.,
Owen O'Neill, Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
