Sir, - Why did Danny Morrison assume, and later confirm to Vincent Browne, that he was the "leading member of Sinn Fein" who claimed to be a "member of the IRA army council" referred to by Sean O'Callaghan on Vincent Browne's radio programme? Why did Morrison, who tells us in his letter how he acted as a point of contact with the IRA leadership on behalf of O'Callaghan's family, recognise himself in this scant description? I think your readers will draw their own conclusions.
Incidentally, I am currently writing, with his co operation, a biography of the former Garda agent and informer, Sean O'Callaghan.
I am therefore most grateful to Danny Morrison for confirming that he knew that O'Callaghan was a member of the Ard Comhairle of Sinn Fein; someone he believed at the time of his disappearance from Kerry at the end of 1985 to be "the leading suspect in the capture of the Marita Ann arms shipment"; and a member of the IRA. These are all claims that O'Callaghan has made to me which have been confirmed by his former Garda handler and other security sources. I had intended to seek further corroboration from Sinn Fein but since, at the time that Morrison and O'Callaghan met in Crumlin Road jail in January 1990, Morrison was on remand on charges for which he was later given an eight year jail sentence and as a former Sinn Fein publicity director, I take his confirmation as authoritative. He has saved me a lot of trouble.
