Sir, - We welcome the introduction by The Irish Times of the new Science on Monday section, edited by Dick Ahlstrom, and incorporating Dr William Reville's column.
This development, together with Computimes, will certainly make The Irish Times worth reading on Mondays for anyone interested in science, technology or computing.
The Irish Times was the first Irish newspaper to introduce a regular column on science (by Dr Reville) and we publicly congratulated you at the time. We believe that these articles and news items will greatly assist in increasing the level of scientific and technological awareness amongst the general public - something which has been lacking for some time.
We also believe that this development will tie in well with the implementation of the White Paper on Science and Technology, and the work of such bodies as Forfas and the Information Society Commission in raising awareness and debate. It should assist all of us working in this area.
We can only hope that more Irish newspapers and media follow suit, and introduce regular items on science. We hope to be in a position to similarly congratulate them in the future. - Yours, etc.,
From John D. McGrath
Chairperson, Youth Science Ireland, Wicklow Street, Dublin 2.
