Sir, - I read with incredulity Mr Moran's letter (November 25th) in which he praises the Salmon Management Task Force Report that recommends the legalising of monofilament net, while increasing the length of drift nets to "1,500 yards of net in all areas of the coastline". The season for fishing with this greatly increased and universally condemned material would be restricted to June 1st to August 31st, the very months when salmon are keen to enter freshwater.
The whole report reeks of a hidden agenda, and the survival of the salmon does not figure in it. Should it be implemented, it will push the salmon to the verge of extinction and as Chief Seattle said: "Whatever befalls the earth, befalls the sons of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself". - Yours, etc.,
