Sir, - A panelist on a recent Questions and Answers programme expressed concern that Irish society was now teetering on the edge of what he called "lynch law" and that many people in public life were in fear of being "outed" for an indiscretion in their past. The rest of the panel seemed to agree that this had all come about through the diligence of journalists.
While Ireland has been going through a time of purging - much of it necessary - I nevertheless share that panelist's fears about these disturbing trends in our society. The grand inquisitor of RTE and his many acolytes throughout the Irish media seem to be embarked on a crusade to ferret out all wrongdoing, past and present, in Irish life and to have the suspects tried, judged and executed in the full glare of media spotlights.
I hope, though, that these present-day inquisitors will also occasionally investigate their fellows in the media world to uncover whatever unprofessional, unethical, unfair or corrupt practices any of them may have been guilty of. Or are they all just perfect? - Yours, etc.,
Louis Power, Loughlinstown, Co Dublin.
