Sir, - In July 1996, Dublin Corporation saw fit to erect signs on Sandymount Strand citing the Dogs Act 1986, which requires dog owners to clean up after their dogs or face a fine of IR£100. Now there are warning signs informing all users of the Strand that rat poison has been laid in order to deal with the rat infestation on the beach.
The rats would be forgiven for thinking that Sandymount Strand is in fact an open sewer, as the beach is currently covered in three inches of foul smelling sludge and has been like this since May of this year. The fouling of the Strand by dogs seems extraneous. when one observes the human sewage gushing forth out of the pipe by the Merrion Gates level crossing.
I can only assume that this is all part of a greater scheme within Dublin Corporation to ensure that eventually no one uses the beach. It would then no longer have to spend any of the taxpayers money maintaining it.
Yours, etc..
Park Avenue,
Sandymount.
