Sir, - It is news to us that Dr Michael Woods TD, Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, "has been congratulated for introducing quota and tagging measures" to regulate salmon exploitation (The Irish Times, December 14th). Lorna Siggins further surprises us when she relates that "the Minister has sought agreement on new conservation measures for spring salmon". We have no evidence of the existence of either scenario.
While the Minister is to be congratulated on abolishing the barbaric salmon traps on the Galway Weir and on the Moy at Ballina, we do wish that he would inform our 10,000 members of what other changes he has supposedly got agreement on. Or are we to rely on Ms Siggins for news? - Yours, etc.,
Dan Joy, Pro, Federation of Irish Salmon and Sea Trout Anglers, Listowel,Co Kerry.
