Sir, - In the interests of safety I would like to warn all outdoor swimmers and bathers in the Dun Laoghaire area of the danger from the swell following the arrival of the new HSS ferry in the harbour.
The swell is quite different from that produced by a conventional ferry, presumably because of the different method of propulsion. It is particularly dangerous at high tide. initially it is not evident on the surface but appears as a very strong underwater current which could easily drag an unsuspecting swimmer off a rock or platform. it lasts for three or four minutes, generally striking the shore at about the same time as the ferry docks and then develops into rough water.
This warning applies equally to young children playing on beaches or persons fishing off rocks in the area. - Yours, etc.,
