Madam, – The IRFU now justifies increased ticket prices (in the middle of a recession) by telling us that these reflect access for patrons “to a greater number of concession stands, restaurants and bars” (Home News, August 20th). Perhaps we are meant to think they are conceding something to us, rather than that they are, in fact, charging a concession price to the retailers to allow them sell at the venue. Is it that it believes we are all fools or just that any old verbiage will suffice to get out of a tight corner? – Yours, etc,

Madam, – Will those of us who cannot afford the astronomical prices for the new Lansdowne Road be able to watch the the six-nations home games on free-to-air television? Or is the IRFU intent on keeping the rugby supporter base as closed as possible? – Yours, etc,

Madam, – I’ve devised an ingenious solution to the problem of the IRFU’s overpricing of tickets for the forthcoming internationals: don’t buy them! – Yours, etc,

Madam, – I write in support of Dr Andrew Kelly who broached the subject of ticket prices at the Aviva Stadium (August 18th).

I am struggling to understand the thinking behind this four-match only policy as I am sure there are many people who may not want to, or be able to go to all four matches. One consequence of this is that there could be a flooding of the black market with unwanted tickets. Also there is a great danger of losing many fans around the country who have to budget on match days for travel, accommodation, food, etc – all of which are at peak rates.

It appears that the IRFU has joined the “rip-off” culture afflicting many other facets of modern Irish life and as a rugby fan I am disappointed that it may be some time before I get to see a match at the new stadium. – Yours, etc,

A chara, – So the taxpayer funds the redevelopment of a stadium that only the wealthy can afford the admission cost to.

I thought the primary purpose of tax was the redistribution of the wealth the other way around. – Is mise,

Madam, - There is a one-word cure for the rugby rip-off at Lansdowne Road: “boycott”. – Yours, etc,
