Sir, - Recent statistics show that almost 30 per cent of our young people are smokers. Most of these will be unable to quit tobacco use because of the addictive nature of the product and many will die from the effects of it.
Dr Fenton Howell (July 8th) requests RTE to cease marketing tobacco through the RTE Guide and I strongly support his call. The
RTE Guide is a family magazine, our young people are affected by advertising , and recently we have had admissions from major US
manufacturers to the effect that young people were being specifically targeted.
Many of our cancers are linked by research to tobacco use. We need to protect our young people from this product, and RTE should now make a sensible judgement on this important matter. - Yours, etc,
