RTE And The Licence Fee

Sir, - The director-general of RT╔, Mr Bob Collins, seems to have a very wide definition of public service broadcasting. He has stated that the licence fee should be increased to account for the fall in RT╔'s advertising revenue.

Hence, when advertisers decide to reduce budgets, or when they maintain or increase budgets but just decide to give a higher share to TV3, UTV, Channel 4, TG4, or Sky, Mr Collins would like the public to "service" the RT╔ shortfall.

If this is the case, the Minister needs to make the fee variable each year, so when RT╔'s advertising revenue goes up or down the licence fee will adjust accordingly. - Yours, etc.,
