A chara, - Letters from a number of your readers (including myself) in the past year regarding the accent used by RTE broadcasters went unanswered by RTE. As a result I wrote to Prof Farrel Corcoran, chairman of the RTE Authority. In his reply he opined that perhaps the particular accents might be the result of "speech and drama schools", said he equally regretted the inability of the under-30s to correctly pronounce "ou", and said that he would consult RTE's director-general.
I replied, noting his opinion of the strangled "ou", and inquired why, irrespective of the source of the particular accent, RTE employed persons with that accent to read the news.
He replied that he "had nothing further to add". Perhaps the director-general treated his inquiry with the same contempt as he did all your recent correspondents. - Is mise,
Flann O Riain, Eatharlach, Co Thiobraid Arann.
